President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Moon Jae-in (Photo: AFP/VNA) Seoul (VNA) – President of the Republic ofKorea (RoK) Moon Jae-in on February 25 announced that his country will workhard to prepare for the resumption of economic cooperation with the DemocraticPeople’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), stressing the need for the RoK to help the latterescape poverty.
Speaking at a weekly meeting with his aides in Seoul, theRoK leader said that if the DPRK opens up its economy, its neighbouringcountries, international organisations and global funds will engage in theprocess.
He further stated that during the process, the RoK shouldnot lose its role as pioneer, but master its destiny in the Korean Peninsula.
Moon’s announcement came one week after he offered theresumption of RoK-DPRK economic cooperation as part of measures that the US mayoffer to the DPRK in exchange for denuclearisation.
In a latest development, the UN Security Council SanctionCommittee on North Korea allowed three international organisations to transportgoods to the DPRK for humanitarian assistance programmes. They are the WorldHealth Organisation (WHO), Ireland’s Concern Worldwide, and Germany’s Welthungerhilfe.
The organisations presented plans to bring goods to the DPRKwhich were subsequently approved. These included washing equipment, and radiationtesting and telecommunications devices from the WHO to use in their offices; aswell as food and production equipment from Welthungerhilfe.
However, the committee will not announce a specific list ofthe goods and their values.
So far, a total of 15 projects for the DPRK have receivedapproval, including those from UNICEF, the Eugene Bell Foundation, and theInternational Federation of Red Cross and RedCrescent Societies. The list of projects is available at the committee’swebsite. –VNA
