RoK President offers apology over Vietnamese bride’s incident

President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Lee Myung-bak said in his regular address broadcast on the KBS World Radio on July 26 that international marriage brokers must rectify their wrong ideas and practices and the government will try to work out measures to improve the situation.

President Lee expressed his deep condolences to the family of Vietnamese bride Thach Thi Hoang Ngoc, who was killed by her mentally ill husband just eight days after she came to the RoK earlier this month.

The incident showed that the RoK still lacks a mechanism strong enough to protect vulnerable groups and encourage good behaviours towards them, he said.

He also stressed that RoK people should have a more mature and deeper view on multi-cultural families, a long-term issue that will diversify the RoK culture.

The number of immigrant spouses in the RoK has already surpassed 180,000 and their children have exceeded 120,000. It is also noteworthy that four out of 10 married men in Korea farming and fishing communities have wives from other countries, including Vietnam , the Philippines and China./.
