Seoul (VNA) – Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Woo Won-shik has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ASEAN-focused diplomacy and its active role in ASEAN-led mechanisms when he hosted a luncheon for diplomatic envoys from 10 ASEAN nations in Seoul on January 15.
He said the RoK-ASEAN cooperation has seen remarkable progress in trade and cultural exchanges since the establishment of dialogue relations in 1989.
Woo highlighted the transformation of the partnership into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024 as a milestone in their shared history.
He said the year 2025, the Year of the Green Snake, which symbolises new beginnings, wise transformation and growth, marks the start of an era where the RoK-ASEAN relations grow and evolve toward an even brighter future.
Based on their upgraded partnership, the RoK and ASEAN aim for practical and mutually beneficial cooperation. The RoK’s National Assembly will continue its involvement in the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly to foster regional collaboration, the Speaker added.
On behalf of the ambassadors of ASEAN countries, Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Vu Ho welcomed the New Year luncheon and suggested regular meetings between Korean NA leaders, parliamentarians and ambassadors of the ASEAN countries to update information on legal policies between the parties. They will not only strengthen cooperation between parliamentary bodies of the countries but also contribute to promote exchanges between central agencies, localities and people of the RoK and the ASEAN nations./.
