Hanoi (VNA) – State President Luong Cuong’s state visit to Angola from August 6-9 has attracted extensive coverage from major Angolan media outlets, which hailed it as a historic milestone in bilateral ties and a gateway to future cooperation.
Jornal de Angola, the national news agency ANGOP, and state broadcasters Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA) and Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA) carried prominent reports on the visit, noting its significance as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (November 12, 1975 – 2025).
Jornal de Angola, the country’s largest newspaper and the Government’s official mouthpiece, described the ceremonial welcome held at the Presidential Palace in Luanda on August 7, with a 21-gun salute. The paper called the visit a “historic milestone” coinciding with both the 50th anniversary of bilateral ties and Angola’s 50 years of independence.
It highlighted President Cuong’s talks with Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, quoting the Angolan leader as saying: “This visit is a testament to the enduring friendship between Angola and Vietnam, opening opportunities for both countries to grow together in a multipolar world.” The paper also noted that Ho Chi Minh Avenue in Luanda – home to the headquarters of the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) – stands as a symbol of the long-lasting solidarity between the two nations.
Meanwhile, ANGOP underlined Angola’s 2025 role as Chair of the African Union (AU) and reported President Cuong’s appreciation for Angola’s initiatives to promote peace and security in the region. Its coverage detailed the leaders’ talks, the signing of cooperation agreements, and discussions on potential partnerships in agriculture, oil and gas, telecommunications, and digital transformation. The August 8 article quoted President Cuong praising Angola’s leadership within the AU and calling for support in expanding Vietnam–AU cooperation. ANGOP also covered the joint press conference, where President Lourenço expressed pride in the historic relationship with Vietnam.
The news site Voz de Angola commended the contributions of the Vietnamese community in Angola in sectors such as construction, trade, education, and health care. It highlighted President Cuong’s wreath-laying at the statue of President Ho Chi Minh within the Vietnamese Embassy campus and described the 50th anniversary celebration in Luanda, attended by about 400 representatives from both countries, as a symbol of cultural and historical connection.
“The visit not only consolidates political relations but also tightens the friendship through the Vietnamese community’s presence,” the site noted.
Meanwhile, Ver Angola focused on the economic and social aspects of the trip, stressing cooperation potential in rice and fruit cultivation, telecommunications, and renewable energy. It mentioned the Vietnamese community of 6,000–10,000 in Angola as an important driver of bilateral cultural and economic exchanges. The site quoted Angolan Minister of External Relations Tete Antonio at the anniversary celebration as saying that Angola treasures Vietnam’s support during the struggle for independence and wishes to learn from its economic development experience to diversify national economy.
TPA and RNA also aired extensive coverage. RNA underscored the visit’s role in enhancing Angola’s profile as rotating AU Chair in 2025 and praised Vietnam as a strategic partner in advancing South–South cooperation. Interviews with Angolan officials aired by RNA emphasised joint opportunities in agriculture and education, including calls to expand student and expert exchanges.
Across print, broadcast, and online platforms, Angolan media portrayed the visit as a warm and historic occasion, strengthening bilateral ties and boosting Vietnam’s presence in Africa through the AU.
