S’tieng group’s basket, brocade weaving recognised as national heritages

The traditional crafts of basket weaving and brocade weaving of the S’tieng ethnic group in Binh Phuoc province have been declared National Intangible Cultural Heritages at a recent ceremony.

Binh Phuoc is home to many ethnic groups, of which the S’tieng have the second-largest population, of approximately 97,000 people in 11 districts. The unique cultural identity of the S’tieng includes basket and brocade weaving.

Basket weaving and brocade weaving of the S’tiêng people are traditional crafts developed over generations, showcasing the skilled and creative hands of S’tieng artisans.

To create baskets and brocade products, artisans must have talent, skill, and a thorough understanding of techniques.

They also need to identify and properly utilise natural materials like leaves and tree bark to produce dyes and master the techniques of creating patterns./.
