Strong cold spell hits northern region, causing rains

A strong cold spell, which is unusual for this time of the year, hit northern and central provinces on March 15.
A strong cold spell, which is unusual for this time of the year, hitnorthern and central provinces on March 15, bringing rain andthunderstorms in some places, according to the National Centre forHydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

As a result, thetemperatures in the regions dropped to between 8-14 degree Celsius, even3-5 degree Celsius in some places, on March 16.

Heavysnow was seen in Sa Pa district, O Qui Ho mountain pass and Bat Xatdistrict, the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.

According to local people, this was the thickest snow fall in the region during the last 10 years.

The unusual weather phenomena attracted a lot of tourists to Sa Pa, which is a popular mountain resort site.

Italso snowed in several northern mountainous provinces, including PhjiaOac mountain peak in Cao Bang province’s Nguyen Binh district and theDong Van stone plateau in Ha Giang province where the temperature fellto minus 4 degree Celsius./.

The poacher, Tran Van Binh, 57 years old, residing in Tan Nam hamlet, Tan Binh commune, Tan Bien district, was found with a homemade gun and three poached animals including two cheo cheo (Chevrotain) classified in group IIB of endangered, rare wildlife as per Decree 84/2021/ND-CP and a hawk (Pandion haliaetus).

Rare animals released back into the wild

The released animals include one Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis), two Keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii), two Impressed tortoises (Manouria impressa), three Pygmy slow lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus), one Big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum), four Bourret’s box turtles (Cuora bourreti), and one Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis).

Two new lizard species discovered in Vietnam
