Hanoi (VNA) – The Asia-America Gateway (AAG) submarine internet cable has broken due to tropical storm Nida, the second of its kind in 2016, according to internet service providers.

This incident slowed down internet speeds in Vietnam.

A repair schedule is yet to be confirmed.

The AAG is a 20,000-kilometre-long submarine communications cable system, connecting Southeast Asia with the US mainland across the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii.

Vietnam is connected to four international submarine internet cable systems, namely the AAG, SMW3 (Southeast Asia - Middle East - Western Europe 3), TVH (Thailand-Vietnam-Hong Kong), and IA (Intra Asia).

AAG, which accounts for 40 to 70 percent of internet connection in Vietnam, was put into operation in November 2009.-VNA
