The Thai cabinet has approved a plan on the construction of a specialeconomic zone (SEZ) in its northern border area with Myanmar.
The SEZ aims to develop an economic corridor linking the West and the East of Thailand.
The first phase plans will build the second Thailand-MyanmarFriendship Bridge, an industrial zone and a duty-free and shoppingcentre.
Myanmar President U Thein Seinand Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra discussed the Dawei SEZplan in December 2012. The two countries signed a memorandum ofunderstanding to jointly develop the zone in May 2008.-VNA
