HCM City (VNA) - The 7th meeting between the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence and the National Council of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodia Motherland (SFDCM) was held in Ho Chi Minh City on December 29 to review the projects on building, repairing and embellishing the countries' friendship monuments in Cambodia, and discuss coordination orientations for the coming time.

The event was co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Vo Minh Luong and Standing Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the SFDCM National Council Nhem Valy, who is also Chairman of the committee for restoring and embellishing the Vietnam - Cambodia friendship monuments.

During the meeting, the two sides highly valued achievements gained under the 6th meeting’s minutes signed on December 27, 2023 in HCM City, noting the projects have been carried out on schedule and reaped good results.

They highlighted their close coordination in surveying and assessing the management and protection of the friendship monuments in Cambodia.

They have jointly worked on monument design, cost estimation, and appraisal reports in accordance with regulations; regularly discussed measures for effective implementation; and actively inspected and urged relevant agencies, units, and localities to construct, renovate, and restore the facilities.

Since 2015, Vietnam has provided financial support for Cambodia to carry out 24 monument construction and renovation projects and upgrade the headquarters of the SFDCM National Council.

The two sides agreed to continue to effectively implement the documents signed at bilateral meetings, while closely coordinating to accelerate the on-going construction and renovation projects with good quality. They will press ahead with reviewing the friendship monuments in need of restoration to submit proposals to the countries' relevant authorities.

In addition, project dossiers will be prepared by the Cambodian side and submitted to Vietnam for appraisal. The Vietnamese side will send delegations to wok with Cambodia in surveys and inspections, serving as a basis for providing financial support for the projects.

Both sides reaffirmed that the Vietnam - Cambodia friendship monuments in Cambodia are historical and cultural structures representing the two countries’ relations. Given this, the facilities need to be managed and protected properly. They also suggested the two governments sign an agreement on protecting the monuments.

On the basis of the countries' good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability, they expressed confidence that they will successfully carry out the two governments' policy on the construction, repair, and embellishment of the Vietnam - Cambodia friendship monuments in Cambodia./.
