Vietnam’s 2009 Clean Up the World campaign was launched on September 20 in Viet Tri, the northern province of Phu Tho.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Xuan Cuong called on the people to make the environment healthier and cleaner with such practical deeds as cleaning streets, planting trees and protecting water resources.

Present at the event were representatives of the Australian Embassy, the UNDP, UNEP, IUCN, WWF, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Vietnam Union of Scientific and Technological Associations and Phu Tho provincial People’s Committee.

Following the launch ceremony, the participants joined local people in planting trees and collecting rubbish at a park and the Me Quang resettlement area in Viet Tri city.

Earlier on September 19, the authorities of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang and the Vietnam Peasants’ Association also launched activities in response to the Clean Up the World campaign.

The Clean Up the World campaign was started by one Australian, Mr. Ian Kiernan, in 1989. This year over 35 million people in 120 countries will take part in the campaign./.
