– A delegation of the Engineering Troops of the Russian Armed Forces led by the force’s commander Lt. Gen. Yuri Stavitsky visited and held a working session with the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department (VPD) in Hanoi on October 10.

The visit is made under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Defence Ministries of Vietnam and Russia signed last November on cooperation in UN peacekeeping activities, and aims at enhancing collaboration between the military engineering forces of the two countries.

Speaking at the working session with the Russian guests, Director of the VPD Colonel Hoang Kim Phung stressed that joining UN peacekeeping activities is a major policy of the Party, State and Defence Ministry of Vietnam.

On the occasion, the two sides agreed to continue the exchange of all-level delegations in the field of peacekeeping military engineering, and to propose integrating this content into the bilateral defence dialogue.

The two sides also reached consensus on the sharing of information, experience and professional skills regarding peacekeeping missions through joint training courses, seminars and exchange of experts. In the immediate future, when one side organizes international training courses on peacekeeping, it will invite the other side to attend.

In addition, Vietnam and Russia will coordinate activities at multilateral forums, consult each other on issues related to UN peacekeeping missions and intensify cooperation in military engineering in the time ahead.

Colonel Phung asked that Russia, as a permanent member in the UN Security Council, will advise Vietnam in deploying its peacekeeping military engineering unit to a suitable peacekeeping mission.

Lt. Gen. Yuri Stavitsky praised Vietnam’s performance in peacekeeping activities and affirmed that Russia’s engineering troops force is willing to share its experience with Vietnam and join hands in training.

He also voiced support of Vietnam’s proposals and initiatives in the field.-VNA
