Vietnam, Slovakia enhance trade, investment ties

Vietnam and Slovakia have reached a consensus on strengthening trade and investment ties, especially in the fields that Slovakia holds advantages and Vietnam has demand, including agriculture, infrastructure, environment and information technology.

The agreement was gained during Deputy Foreign Minister Bui ThanhSon’s recent visit to Slovakia, during which Son chaired a politicalconsultation with the Slovak Foreign Ministry.

Deputy FM Son also held meetings with State Secretary of the ministryPeter Burian, President of the Slovakia-Vietnam FriendshipParliamentarians’ Group Josef Viskupic, Chairman of the NationalCouncil’s Committee for European Matters Lubos Blaha, and EconomicMinistry State Secretary Rastilav Chovanec.

During the political consultation and meetings, the Slovak side spokehighly of Vietnam’s socio-economic development and internationalintegration achievements. They affirmed that Slovakia wishes to enhancemulti-faceted cooperation with Vietnam.

Thehosts said that their country had ratified the partnership andcooperation agreement (PCA) between Vietnam and the EU and will furthercollaboration with the Southeast Asian country at multi-lateral forums,particularly within the framework of the United Nations, the Asia-EuropeMeeting (ASEM), and the ASEAN-EU partnership.

Both sides pledged to create favourable conditions for the twocountries’ businesses to learn about each market and seek cooperationopportunities, and agreed to expand connections in education-training,tourism and defence industry.

Regarding the EastSea issue, the Slovak side voiced its concern over recent tensionscaused by China’s illegal positioning of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981deep inside Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zonesince early May.

They confirmed their backingfor the settlement of disputes by peaceful means on the basis ofinternational law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on theLaw of the Sea.

Last year, two-way trade between Vietnam and Slovakia reached 407 million USD, up 35 percent against the previous year.-VNA

To further strengthen Vietnam-Belgium relations, especially parliamentary cooperation, both sides agreed to enhance delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly between parliamentary committees and friendship groups. They also pledged to share legislative and supervisory experience, coordinate positions in international organisations, support each other’s candidacies for UN bodies, and effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
