Vietnam-Vatican joint communique on Status of Resident Papal Representative

On the occasion of the visit by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, H.E. Vo Van Thuong, to the Vatican on July 27, 2023, on the basis of the 10th Session of the Joint Working Group between Vietnam and the Holy See on March 31, 2023 in the Vatican, and with the desire to continue advancing bilateral relations, the two sides officially announce that the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Holy See concluded the “Agreement on the Status of the Resident Papal Representative and the Office of the Resident Papal Representative in Vietnam”.

Vatican City (VNA) - On the occasion of thevisit by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, H.E. Vo Van Thuong, to the Vatican on July 27, 2023, on the basis ofthe 10th Session of the Joint Working Group between Vietnam and theHoly See on March 31, 2023 in the Vatican, and with thedesire to continue advancing bilateral relations, the two sides officiallyannounce that the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the HolySee concluded the “Agreement on the Status of the Resident Papal Representativeand the Office of the Resident PapalRepresentative in Vietnam”.  

Atthe talks between President Vo Van Thuong and Pope Francis, and CardinalSecretary of State Pietro Parolin respectively, the two sides expressed highappreciation for the noteworthy progress in the relations between Vietnam andthe Holy See, and the positive contributions by the Catholic community of Vietnamthus far.

Bothsides expressed their confidence that the Resident Papal Representative willfulfill the role and mandate given in the Agreement, provide support to theVietnamese Catholic community in their undertakings in the spirit of the lawand, always inspired by the Magisterium of the Church, to fulfill the vocationof “accompanying the nation” and to be “good Catholics and good citizens”, andcontribute to the development of the country; while the Representative will bea bridge to advance relations between Vietnam and the Holy See./.
