Vietnam win int’l U21 football tournament

Vietnam won the Thanh Nien (Young People) Newspaper International U21 Football Tournament after defeating Myanmar 5-3 in a penalty shootout in a final match in the central city of Hue on December 18.

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Vietnam won the Thanh Nien (Young People) NewspaperInternational U21 Football Tournament after defeating Myanmar 5-3 in a penaltyshootout in a final match in the central city of Hue on December 18.

The two teams drew 2-2 after 90 minutes of official competition.

Win Naing Tun and Soe Lwin Lwin scored for the visitors while Tran Duc Namnetted twice to lever for Vietnam, sending to the match to penalties.

All five Vietnamese players found the back of the net.

The champions pocketed 12,000 USD with Nguyen Thanh Tuan voted as the bestgoalkeeper and Dinh Thanh Binh as the top scorer.

Myanmar took the second place and Win Naing Tun was named MVP of the tournament.

In the third-place playoff, Malaysia won 2-0 against the Republic of Koreanteam Gimhae CFC.

The annual tournament saw the presence of four teams, including U21 Gimhea CFCof the RoK, U21 Malaysia, U21 Myanmar and U21 Vietnam.

The best Vietnamese players this year will beselected for the U22 squad to compete at the Southeast Asian U22 Championship,the Asian U23 Championship’s qualifying round and the SEA Games next year.-VNA
