Vietnamese students win medals at International Biology Olympiad

All three Vietnamese students claimed medals, including one silver and two bronzes at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2023, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

Hanoi (VNA) - The silver medal went to Nguyen Tien Loc, a 11th grader of the High School for Gifted Students of the University of Natural Sciences under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The two bronze medals were secured by Tran Pham Manh, a 12th grader of the High School for Gifted Students of the University of Natural Sciences under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Vu The Anh, a 12th grader from Vinh Phuc High School for Gifted Students in Vinh Phuc province.

IBO 2023, the 34th of its kind, was held by the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain City from July 2-11, with the participation of 295 contestants from 80 countries and territories worldwide.

With one Silver and two Bronze medals at the International Biology Olympiad in 2023, the Vietnamese National Team continued keeping its encouraging tradition that 100% of participants win prizes. The Ministry of Education and Training said this result affirms the quality of general education and the right direction in selecting and fostering excellent students, and at the same time demonstrates the efforts of the students, teachers and schools.

The Ministry of Education and Training plans to welcome and congratulate the achievements of the team at Noi Bai International Airport on July 12.

This achievement remains the same as in 2022, the first year that the International Biology Olympiad was held live again after having to be online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vietnamese delegation had four contestants in Yerevan city, Armenia.

Although the delegation faced many difficulties as all four contestants were infected with COVID-19 and challenged with an unfamiliar climate and food. But the delegation won 4 medals, including one Silver and three Bronze medals.

Vietnamese students participated in the International Biology Olympiad for the first time in 1996 and since then have gained many achievements.

In 2016, Vietnam hosted the International Biology Olympiad for the first time and won the Gold Medal for the second time after 16 years. The achievement belonged to Vu Thi Chinh, a 12th grader at the High School for the Gifted School of Nature at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The year 2018 was a milestone in Vietnam's history of participating in the International Biology Olympiad as three out of four students won gold and one silver medal. In particular, Nguyen Phuong Thao, a 12th grader at the High School for the Gifted of Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University won the "The First Winner" award - an award for candidates who achieved the highest score in the exam, with a score of 98.13/100 points. Currently, Phuong Thao is also the only contestant in Vietnam to ever receive this award./.
