VN attends World Meteorological Congress in Geneva

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha is leading the Vietnamese delegation to the 16th WMO Congress which is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 16-June 3.

Vietnam for the first time has taken part in the 12-member nomination committee for the election of key WMO positions for the 2011-2015 period.

The Vietnamese delegation contributed its opinions to documents discussed at the congress and actively worked to mobilise support for international treaties within the WMO framework and with WMO members.

The congress focused discussions on the proposed global framework for climate services (GFCS) which is designed to help countries, particularly the most vulnerable, cope with climate variability and climate change.

The 16th congress has elected David Jarraud of Canada as President and Michel Jarraud from France as Secretary General of the WMO for the 2011-2015 term.

On the sidelines of the congress, the Vietnamese delegation had bilateral working sessions with delegations from Canada, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and the US to establish and strengthen cooperation in hydrometeorology./.
