VN wins four medals at Chemistry Olympiad

Four Vietnamese students have won two silver and two bronze medals at the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO), held in Japan’s capital city of Tokyo from July 19-28.
Four Vietnamese students have won two silver and two bronze medals atthe 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO), held in Japan’scapital city of Tokyo from July 19-28.

The twosilver medals went to Nguyen Duc Binh from Thanh Hoa province and LuuNguyen Hong Quang while the bronzes were awarded to Mai Thu Cuc from HaiDuong province and Le Anh Tuan from Hai Phong city, whose performancesresulted in Vietnam, France and Poland tying for 24 th place out of the68 countries and territories taking part.

Do QuySon, a Doctor of Chemistry and Vietnam ’s team leader said thatalthough they did not win any gold, as in previous contests, all thestudents won a medal, which is an encouraging result.

Son added that for the past five years, the Vietnamese team has alwaystaken gold medals home with them but recently, other countries arebecoming increasingly well-prepared and the competition is fiercelycompetitive.

China won with four gold medals,followed by Thailand and the Republic of Korea with three gold and onesilver, respectively. Hosts Japan came 4 th along with Singapore ,the Czech Republic , the US , Taiwan and Hungary .

The 43rd ICHO will be held in Turkey in 2011 and Vietnam plans to host the contest in 2014./.
