Jointly organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment,the General Department of Seas and Islands and the Vietnam Associationof Foreign Invested Enterprises, the event brought together scientistsand scholars to share experience and put forward recommendations with aview to making the best use of the seas, islands and coastal regions inthe future.

On addressing the event, the DeputyMinister of Natural Resources and Environment Chu Pham Ngoc Hienhighlighted the maritime-based economy’s importance in the nationaleconomic development strategy, adding that the thriving maritime-basedeconomy also helps to increase national defence and security and defendsovereignty over seas and islands.

Hien said thecountry’s maritime potential, which includes its coastal regions, seasand islands remains huge, adding that appropriate use of these areas isan urgent and long-term issue.

At the event, theparticipants discussed the master plan for maritime economicdevelopment, international experiences and the situation in Vietnam, aswell as the way forward for the coastal economic zones that arescattered across the country.-VNA
