British Ambassador to Vietnam Dr Antony Stokes emphasised thesignificance of the climate change action plan in the transport sectorof Vietnam , especially the projects on green public vehicles in Hanoiand HCM City .
According to Trinh QuocBinh, Deputy Head of the Division of Road Transport Management, Ho ChiMinh City Transport Department, the city has been operating four busroutes with 28 buses using compressed natural gas (CNG) since 2008.After the trial three-year period, the use of CNG buses helped save30-40 percent of fuel cost, thus reducing transport fee.
The city will run 350 CNG buses by 2015, he said.
The Transport Ministry also took this occasion to disseminate itsaction plan to respond to climate change in the 2011-2015 period.
Under the plan, the ministry will assess the impact level of climatechange on road, railways, inland waterways, maritime, aviation sectorsin terms of both infrastructure development and transportationactivities and identify suitable adaptation measures to minimise damageto transport construction works and ensure smooth and safe traffic.
Itis also set to mobilise international resources to implement measuresto adapt to climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to raiseawareness as well as expertise and management skills for agenciesand units under the Ministry.
It will implement sixprioritised projects on impact assessment and solutions in response toclimate change in 2013, and mobilise international support for theimplementation of 12 other projects./.
