The first World Media Summit (WMS) wrapped up in Beijing, China, on Oct. 10 with the issuance of a joint statement.

In the joint statement, the delegates said that the world is undergoing complicated and profound changes.

The economic globalization, the information explosion, and the prevalence of new communication technologies, plus the diversity and integration of world cultures, have provided great opportunities for global media development and set up an important platform for media organizations to cover world events and global issues, they said.

However, the world media is also facing many challenges, including the global financial crisis, fast changing audience demands and the rapid advancement of emerging technologies.

“Accurate, objective, impartial and fair” coverage of news events on the globe is needed to help the world media overcome the above challenges, they stressed.

At the gathering, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) Deputy General Director Nguyen Duc Loi delivered a speech on challenges and solutions for the media industry in the time of digital technology.

He said over the past years, VNA had applied multimedia technology to provide better service for its clients. The agency also increased investment in diversifying types of services in order to adapt to the new information situation.

About 300 representatives from more than 170 media outlets from around the globe gathered in the two-day summit to discuss shifts and challenges in the industry.

Launched at the joint proposal of Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, The Associated Press, Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System and Google, the first WMS was hosted by Xinhua./.
