ADB funds development of VN’s water supplies

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged a loan of 1 billion USD for Vietnam to carry out its water development programme over the 2011-2020 period.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged a loan of 1 billion USDfor Vietnam to carry out its water development programme over the2011-2020 period.

According to the TechnicalInfrastructure Department under the Ministry of Construction (MoC), ADBplans to lend the country 250 million USD in 2011 to fullfil projectsincluded in the national programme to provide clean water supplies andprevent a loss of revenue until 2025 as well as grant 1.5 million USDfor the programme’s technical assistance project.

TheMoC said that the programme will focus on raising public awareness andthe capacity of local authorities as well as improving managementprocedures for agencies that supply water. It will also draw up andintroduce mechanisms to prevent the unnecessary loss of water.

The programme will be funded by the State budget, official developmentassistance (ODA), investment credits and capital from the agencies thatsupply water.

The MoC is working with otherministries and agencies to mobilise ODA from the ADB, the World Bank andother organisations to complete the programme./.
