Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Party General Secretary To Lam presided over the Politburo's working session with the Standing Board of the National Assembly (NA) Party Committee on September 11 to provide feedback on draft documents and personnel plans, and preparations for the first Congress of the NA Party Organisation for the 2025-2030 tenure.

Hearing the Standing Board’s briefings on its preparations, the Politburo praised the NA Party Committee's meticulously prepared documents and personnel plans while noting that they were effectively incorporated major orientations of the draft documents for the 14th National Party Congress and closely aligned with the current situation. – State President Luong Cuong hosted a reception on September 11 for Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler, who is on a working visit to Vietnam.

During the meeting, the Vietnamese State leader expressed his belief that the Turkish delegation’s trip will help step up the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries in general, and defence cooperation in particular. Read full story

– Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn attended the third annual Vietnam – Australia Forum on September 11 in Hanoi, as part of her state visit to Vietnam.

Governor-General Mostyn praised the strong bilateral cooperation. She noted that in 2025, Vietnam and Australia will continue to work together to tackle complex global challenges such as volatile trade dynamics, economic growth, digital transformation, energy transition, climate change, gender equality, and public sector reform. – As part of his official visit to Romania from September 8–11, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Khac Dinh held meetings on September 9 with President of the Romanian Senate Mircea Abrudean, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies Natalia Elena Intotero, and the Romania–Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group.

At his talks with the Vice President Intotero of the Chamber of Deputies, the two sides agreed that their traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation have grown strongly through regular high-level exchanges, including between parliamentary leaders, committees and friendship groups. They underlined that 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties with a range of celebratory activities, and pledged to elevate bilateral relations to a new height. Read full story

– Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang hosted a welcome ceremony in Hanoi on September 11 for Minister of National Defence of Türkiye Yasar Guler, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from September 10.

The two ministers held talks right after the ceremony, during which General Giang laid stress on his guest’s trip, aiming at concretising the commitments made by senior leaders of both countries to strengthen defence cooperation, as outlined in the Vietnam – Türkiye Joint Statement during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to the country in November 2023. – A delegation of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence led by Sen. Lt. Gen. Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, attended the 2025 International Defence and Security Equipment Exhibition (DSEI UK 2025) held at ExCel London from September 9–11.

At the invitation of the UK Department for Business and Trade, the Vietnamese delegation visited exhibition booths of leading UK defence industry groups as well as displays from major global defence and security enterprises. They also held meetings with partners and representatives of international businesses in the defence and security sector to exchange views on issues of common interest and bilateral cooperation. – Four Vietnamese commercial banks have joined the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) Alliance for Green Commercial Banks, a global platform designed to drive sustainable finance and promote green banking practices in emerging markets.

Ho Chi Minh City Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank (HDBank), Orient Commercial Joint Stock Bank (OCB), Vietnam Maritime Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MSB) and Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank (VPBank) are among 20 institutions selected for the alliance’s first cohort. Deputy FM meets French official

Senior Party official reviews preparations for 14th National Party Congress

Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu expressed his belief that relevant agencies will continue to make efforts to basically complete organisation- and service-related preparations by December 31, ensuring readiness for the final rehearsals ahead of the opening of the 14th National Party Congress.

PM urges industry, trade sector to pioneer in six key areas

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that to make a substantive contribution to national development, the industry and trade sector must also achieve double-digit growth, generate new jobs, strengthen traditional growth drivers such as export and consumption, and accelerate emerging engines of growth, including the green, digital, circular, knowledge-based and sharing economies.

Two military officers promoted to rank of Senior Lieutenant General

Lieutenant General Do Xuan Tung, Vice Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA), and Lieutenant General Do Van Banh, Political Commissar of the National Defence Academy were promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant General at a ceremony in Hanoi on December 19.

Vietnam–Laos step up cooperation in procuracy sector

They highly valued the effective and substantive cooperation results achieved by the Supreme People’s Procuracies of Vietnam and Laos in recent years, and called on both sides to continue enhancing coordination, stepping up exchanges of delegations at all levels, sharing professional and technical experience, and maintaining and expanding training and capacity-building programmes for officials.

NA Chairman urges journalists to reflect legislature's strategic vision

The NA leader expressed his confidence that in 2026, journalists will continue to uphold their responsibility, report objectively and from multiple perspectives, accompany the NA in conveying its activities promptly and comprehensively, and identify shortcomings in law-making and legal enforcement to help people-elected agencies operate more effectively and efficiently.

Prime Minister calls for stronger Vietnam–Laos economic connectivity

Top legislator receives Lao foreign minister in Hanoi

The top legislator requested that the two sides continue to work closely together to effectively implement the Vietnam-Laos Joint Statement, the intergovernmental cooperation agreement, and bilateral cooperation programmes, thereby contributing to preserving and developing the bilateral special traditional friendship.

Vietnamese, Lao FMs co-chair 12th political consultation

During the consultation, in a spirit of special trust, the two officials reviewed recent cooperation between the two Parties, countries and foreign ministries. They also discussed future cooperation orientations and held in-depth exchanges on regional and international issues of common concern.
