The ASEAN Secretariat Policy Forum – a platform for encouraging greater public involvement in the activities of the Secretariat – was formally launched on July 14.

The forum draws together prominent speakers to share ideas and insights with the public on issues relevant to the work of the Secretariat, according to a press release from the ASEAN Secretariat.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Secretary-General of ASEAN Surin Pitsuwan said that the ASEAN Secretariat was aware that policy matters were rightly in the scope and purview of the political leadership – ASEAN Leaders and Ministers.

He stressed, however, that it remained incumbent upon the Secretariat to look to what is on the horizon in terms of potential ASEAN policy issues, so when it reaches the Leaders and the Ministers, the Secretariat will be prepared for their deliberations and hand down a decision that can be implemented./.
