Hai Phong (VNA) – Australia’s U23 team defeated Myanmar 1–0 on August 19 to claim the 2025 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship title for the first time.

The final at Lach Tray Stadium in Hai Phong city was a highly anticipated rematch as Myanmar used to beat Australia’s U23s in the group stage. However, Australia, coached by Joe Palatsides, showed marked improvement with strong ball control, diverse attacks, and solid defence. Their semi-final victory over hosts Vietnam boosted their confidence ahead of the final.

Myanmar, under Japanese coach Uki Tetsuro, earned praise for disciplined defence and sharp counterattacks. Forward Win Theingi Tun, with seven goals in the tournament, was their key offensive threat.

Before the final, Coach Uki emphasised that team victory is more important than any individual, while player Khin Marlar Tun expressed strong determination to win to inspire women’s football of Myanmar.

The match started cautiously with both teams balanced. Myanmar used a layered defence and committed fouls to disrupt Australia’s central attacks. Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Australia couldn’t score in the first half.

In the second half, Australia’s superior fitness saw them increase pressure. In the 66th minute, Aideen Keane’s precise cross from the right flank was met by Holly Furphy, who scored the decisive goal.

With this win, Australia’s U23 women clinched the 2025 AFF Women’s Championship, while Myanmar finished as impressive runners-up./.
