Ca Mau Agriculture and Rural Development Department has asked all ship owners in the province to commit not to discharging oil and waste or over exploiting aquatic products, said the department’s Director Le Van Su.

The department has also asked fishermen not to throw dead fish or exploit aquatic products within three nautical miles from coastline in an effort to help the provincial aquatic sector develop in a sustainable manner.

Su noted that in the long- run, the province will also have a comprehensive fishery development plan and set up fishery co-operatives.

Ca Mau currently has 4,400 fishing vessels with more than 20,000 fishermen, exploiting 200,000 tonnes of seafood annually.

Being surrounded by sea on three sides, fishing is an important industry in Ca Mau, the southernmost point of Vietnam.-VNA
