Cambodia pays heed to wind energy

Cambodia has launched a new study on wind energy and its potential to diversify the country’s energy sector, the Khmer Times newspaper reported.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia has launched a new study on wind energy and its potential todiversify the country’s energy sector, the Khmer Times newspaper quotedDirector General of the Department of Energy under Cambodian Ministry of Minesand Energy Victor Jona as saying.

Singapore-based BlueCircle has been granted permission to conduct the study, with findings expectedto be revealed in mid-2018 and the company will invest in the project ifpotential is found.

Total energyconsumption in Cambodia amounts to 2,000 megawatts per year, 60 percent ofwhich is generated from the country’s six hydropower plants, while the rest isimported from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

The project to bolsterrenewable energy is supported by the Cambodian Government, in line with thecountry’s development policy. Renewable energy development has been on the risein recent years, especially solar energy.

Cambodia aims to bringelectricity to all villages nationwide by 2020. As of mid-2017, 79 percent of Cambodian localities had access toelectricity.-VNA
