As many as 5,000 people took part in a charity fundraising day organised by Cargill Vietnam in southern Binh Duong province on July 20.

The event aimed to raise money for underprivileged students in both the locality and nationwide.

So far this year, the Cargill Cares charity fund has collected about 10 billion VND (about 470,000 USD), of which 4 billion VND wad sourced from customers in Vietnam and the rest from the US, said Chanh Truong, Cargill Vietnam Chief Representative.

The money has been channelled into the construction of nine schools, including kindergartens and universities, in provinces such as Phu Yen, Thanh Hoa, Binh Duong, Phu Tho, Binh Dinh and Bac Can, he added.

Over 18 years of operation, the Cargill Cares fund has donated 74.6 billion VND to welfare activities in Vietnam , such as providing assistance to flood-hit victims, presenting scholarships to poor students, providing rehabilitation equipment to disabled orphans and building schools for students in remote areas.

Through its charitable activities, the group aims to build eight more schools in remote areas in Vietnam in 2014.-VNA
