Conference on OVs to be held in Hanoi

A conference to review the six-year implementation of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Politburo’s Resolution No. 36 on the affairs relating to Overseas Vietnamese, will take place in Hanoi on November 4.

The information was unveiled by DeputyMinister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Thanh Son, who is Chairman of theState Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA), at a pressbriefing in the capital city on November 1.

According to Son, the conference also aims to put forward majordirections and policies for the work in the next stage as well asspecific measures and mechanisms to implement the resolution, inpreparation for the upcoming XIth National Party Congress.

The conference will discuss the building of policies and laws thatmeet legitimate interests of OVs and implement the policy of nationalunity, the protection of Vietnamese citizens abroad as well as measuresto promote the strength of the Overseas Vietnamese community and combatactivities that are against the interests of the community and thenation.

To celebrate the event, an arts programmewill be held in the evening of November 4 with the participation of manysingers from within the country and abroad.

According to COVA, nearly 4 million Vietnamese people are living andworking in 103 countries and territories throughout the world.

Around 500,000 Overseas Vietnamese, including 300 experts andintellectuals, return home to work annually and thousands of others comeback for investment and business opportunities.

To date, OVs have invested in over 3,200 projects in the homeland with a total investment of nearly 5.7 billion USD.

Overseas remittances to Vietnam increase by 10-15 percent per year, reaching 6.8 billion USD in 2009./.

To further strengthen Vietnam-Belgium relations, especially parliamentary cooperation, both sides agreed to enhance delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly between parliamentary committees and friendship groups. They also pledged to share legislative and supervisory experience, coordinate positions in international organisations, support each other’s candidacies for UN bodies, and effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

President Cuong warmly welcomed King Philippe and a high-ranking delegation of the Kingdom of Belgium on their first state visit to Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973, affirming that the trip is an important historical milestone, opening up a new page for the friendly relations between the two countries.
