46 percent of craft villages nationwide are heavily polluted, said a report on the subject by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The report is based on a survey of the Component of Pollution Control in Poor Densely Populated Areas (PCDA) with financial assistance from the Danish Embassy in Vietnam.

The survey, which was conducted in 52 craft villages nationwide, showed that pollution was ‘heavy’ in 46 percent, ‘medium’ in 27 percent and ‘light’ in only 27 percent.

The report warned that these pollution levels are likely to increase over time if the problem is not addressed.

According to the report, common kinds of pollution found in the villages are exhaust fumes, waste water and solid wastes created by production activities, which is a direct cause of disease among village labourers and the surrounding population.

Apart from assessing the pollution levels in the villages, the PCDA proposed a five-point plan to address the problem.

They are 1) the completion of relevant institutions and the implementation of environmental protection laws by central-level management agencies, 2) research and planning on land use and environmental protection by local management agencies, waste treatment and penalties for polluters, 3) creating mechanisms and solutions to encourage pollution control, 4) production households themselves operating in conformance with environmental regulations, and 5) raising awareness on the issue in the villages and among the community at large./.
