As many as 21 deaths have been reported as a result of several days of torrential rains in northern mountainous provinces as of September 6.

Lao Cai sees the highest casualties with nine deaths, followed by Thai Nguyen and Lai Chau with three each; Lang Son and Dien Bien, two; and Ha Giang and Son La, one.

Heavy downpours and floods also injured 16, destroyed 37 houses and submerged over 1,700 hectares of rice and other crops. Many roads and works have been inundated.

National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention has sent a team to Lao Cai province to coordinate with its local chapter to help ease the disaster’s aftermaths.

On September 5, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung instructed flood-affected localities to try to keep the situation under control as soon as possible.

On September 3 and 4, heavy rain and whirlwind damaged 40 houses and classrooms in southern Hau Giang province. Damages are estimated to amount to 2.2 billion VND (over 100,000 USD).-VNA
