Hanoi (VNA) - The foreign ministers of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Singapore held talks on June 7 ahead of the summit between DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore on June 12.

Kyodo News confirmed that Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, who arrived in the DPRK earlier in the day, met with his DPRK counterpart Ri Yong-ho in Pyongyang.

During the two-day visit, Balakrishnan is also scheduled to meet with Kim Yong-nam, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK, according to the Singaporean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Balakrishnan's visit, which is made at the invitation of Ri, follows his recent trip to Washington, where he held talks with his US counterpart Mike Pompeo, and comes as Singapore is stepping up preparations for the first-ever summit between the DPRK and US leaders.

On June 5, the White House announced the historic summit between Trump and Kim will take place at Capella hotel on the resort island of Sentosa.-VNA
