Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem will take part in a play-off match after second draw at the FIDE World Cup's first round in the town of Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
Grandmaster Liem (Elo 2708) tied with GM Aleksej Aleksandrov (Elo 2577) of Belarus after 36 moves. They also drew in the first match of this round.
They will play a rapid game to identify the winner who will advance to the second round of 64 players.
Meanwhile, Liem's teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2638) lost to talented Kirill Alekseenko (Elo 2671) of the host country after 49 moves.
Son was eliminated from the tournament but earned a bonus of 6,000 USD./.
