Jakarta (VNA) – A 6.1- magnitude quake hitIndonesia’s West Java island on January 23, injuring 8 people and damaging atleast 130 buildings.

Accordingly Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster agency,six students were seriously injured and two students suffered light injuries whenthe roof of a school in Cianjur collapsed.

Besides schools, more than 130 houses and a mosque were damaged in theprovinces of West Java and Banten.

The US Geological Survey said the quake is about 100 km from Jakarta and about104km from Sukabumi city at a depth of 44 km. The authorities ruled out therisk of a tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularlyhit by earthquakes. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.-VNA

Thailand slashes growth forecast amidst US tariffs
