Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysian consumers spent 6.8 billion ringgit (1.6 billion USD) worth of smartphones last year, according to Germany’s largest market research organisation - GfK.

GfK Southeast Asia managing director Stanley Kee said that GfK’s Point of Sales Tracking figure, which was done between March 2016 and February 2017, showed a significant increase from 5.4 billion ringgit in 2015. The largest largest spike was in the mid-range smartphone segment, fetching 900-1,050 ringgit.

Stanley highlighted that China’s latest smartphone models were the key driver to the surge in mobile device consumption last year.

Malaysian consumers are increasingly using their smartphones for activities like shopping, social network access and internet surfing due to the expansion in mobile connectivity throughout the country.

Price and brand image are decisive factors for Malaysian citizens to purchasing smartphones.

Since Malaysian consumers are largely motivated by price, mid-range category of smartphones will continue to dominate the market in 2017, Stanley said.-VNA
