- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 26 asked for more efforts to further improve the quality and effectiveness of coordination between the Government and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) to contribute to the successful implementation of the 13th National Party Congress’s Resolution and build a strong and modern working class.

Addressing a conference evaluating results of implementing the statute on the working relationship between the Government and the VGCL, PM Chinh requested the organisation to listen to and grasp the thoughts and aspirations of the working class and promptly reflect them to the Party, Government, and businesses so as to promptly find solutions. - Some legislators on May 25 proposed the 2% reduction in value-added tax (VAT) under a resolution of the National Assembly (NA) be extended to continue supporting the country's socio-economic recovery and development.

As part of the ongoing 7th session, the NA held a plenary sitting to discuss a supervisory delegation’s report and a draft NA resolution on results of the supervision over the implementation of the NA’s Resolution No. 43/2022/QH15, dated January 11, 2022, on the fiscal and monetary policies supporting the socio-economic recovery and development programme, and of the NA’s resolutions on some nationally important projects through 2023. - More than 100 scholars and researchers from Vietnam and some European countries gathered at a workshop held at the University of Warsaw, Poland, on May 24 to introduce their studies on the East Sea and help enhance overseas Vietnamese (OV) and international friends’ knowledge about the sea.

The event, attracting scholars and researchers from Poland, Hungary, France, Germany and Vietnam, also aimed to help make objective assessments of the East Sea situation in terms of natural, economic, political and social conditions, and call on EU countries and international organisations to support and sponsor scientific research cooperation projects relating to the East Sea. - The Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations held a ceremony in New York on May 24 to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers and 10 years of the country’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the mission, reviewed the development of and contributions by UN peacekeeping forces over the last 76 years to maintaining peace and security and creating a favourable environment for sustainable development in many regions worldwide. - A delegation from the Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP), led by Chairman of the PVEP Members Council Tran Quoc Viet, on May 24 held a working session with their colleagues of Russia's Zarubezhneft JSC in Russia to discuss potential cooperation areas.

The Vietnamese side praised the technical capabilities of Zarubezhneft and its affiliated petroleum research exploration institute VNIINeft. Read full story

- Starting June 25, the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, will resume its direct air route linking Hanoi to Chengdu, China.

Four flights per week will depart Vietnam’s capital city on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday for Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, one of the largest and most modern airports in China. Read full story

- Tobacco is a burden on society with a total cost of medical examination, treatment, illness, and death of 108 trillion VND (4.24 billion USD) a year, Health Minister Dao Hong Lan told a meeting in Hanoi on May 26 to respond to World No Tobacco Day 2024 (May 31) and National No-Tobacco Week from May 25-31.

Lan cited statistics of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as saying that each year more than 8 million deaths are reported to be related to tobacco use globally. Read full story

- French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet has visited Vietnamese rowers and canoeists who are training in the northern port city of Hai Phong, including those who will compete at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games, according to the Sports Authority of Vietnam under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The ambassador was welcomed by 200 athletes and the entire coaching staff in both rowing and canoeing. Read full story.

- Vietnam’s food booth has made a strong impression at the 2024 Seoul Friendship Festival, which takes place from May 24-26 and gathers representatives and residents from over 70 countries living, working, and studying in the Republic of Korea (RoK).

Vietnam is presenting its popular dishes such as Pho Bo (beef noodle soup) and Nem Ran (fried spring rolls), prepared by staff from Vietnamese representative offices in the East Asian nation. Read full story./.
