- The Central Public Security Party Committee and the Ministry of Public Security hosted a ceremony in Hanoi on July 11 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the traditional day of the People's Security Force (July 12, 1946-2026) and receive the Gold Star Order, a prestigious award bestowed by the Party and the State.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam attended and delivered a speech at the ceremony, which also saw the presence of former Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh; former Politburo members, former Prime Ministers Nguyen Tan Dung and Pham Minh Chinh; former Politburo members, former National Assembly Chairpersons Nguyen Van An and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan; and Politburo member, Standing member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu. - Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has called for the building of an elite, professional and rapidly deployable international search and rescue force as Vietnam seeks to strengthen its capacity to respond to global humanitarian emergencies and contribute more actively to international disaster relief efforts.
Speaking at a ceremony in Hanoi on July 11 to honour the Vietnamese military and public security rescue mission that assisted Venezuela following the twin earthquakes, PM Hung praised the contingent for its courage, professionalism and humanitarian spirit, saying their efforts had further enhanced Vietnam’s international standing as a responsible and compassionate member of the global community. - Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang on July 12 affirmed that Vietnam has always demonstrated its goodwill in complying with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
She made the statement in response to a reporter’s question seeking Vietnam’s comments on 10 years since the ruling was issued by the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under Annex VII of the 1982 UNCLOS in the case between the Philippines and China. Read full text
- Vietnam's recent reclassification by the World Bank (WB) Group as an upper-middle-income economy marks an important milestone in the country’s development trajectory, said Mariam J. Sherman, WB Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lao PDR, noting that while the upgrade reflects Vietnam's remarkable progress, it also brings a new set of growth challenges as the country pursues its ambition of becoming a high-income economy by 2045.
According to the WB Group’s latest annual country income classification, Vietnam's gross national income (GNI) per capita increased from 4,490 USD in 2024 to 4,970 USD in 2025. The figure officially surpasses the new upper-middle-income threshold of 4,636 USD established under the WB's classification system. Among the 218 economies assessed this year, Vietnam was one of only six to be upgraded to a higher income category by the WB Group. The move marks a notable milestone after 17 years in the lower-middle-income group, where Vietnam had remained since 2009. Read full text
- Vietnam’s five-member national team won four gold medals and one silver medal at the 56th International Physics Olympiad 2026 (IPhO 2026), marking the country’s strongest performance in the competition to date, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.
The achievements placed Vietnam among the top seven-performing teams at this year’s Olympiad. It is also the first time that two Vietnamese contestants earned a perfect score of 30/30 in the theoretical examination, surpassing previous performances despite matching the team’s 2017 tally in terms of medal numbers. - Phu Quoc special zone's authorities, in coordination with relevant agencies, have completed search and rescue operations after a tourist canoe capsized off Phu Quoc Island in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang province on July 11 afternoon, and efforts are now focused on handling the aftermath of the accident and providing medical care and support for survivors.
According to the provincial Party Committee, the rescue force had saved and recovered 36 people by 15:30. The accident claimed the lives of 15 Indian nationals, including two women and 13 men. Read full text
- Police in southern An Giang province on July 12 decided to detain and launch criminal proceedings against a local man for alleged legal violations tied to the tourist boat capsize that claimed the lives of 15 visitors in Phu Quoc.
The detainee was identified as captain Nguyen Hong Hai, 57, a resident of Thuan Tien hamlet, Son Kien commune, An Giang province, who was temporarily staying in the Phu Quoc special zone. Read full text
- Vietnamese wushu athlete Duong Thuy Vi has claimed her first-ever gold medal at the fourth Wushu Taolu World Cup after producing a commanding performance in the women’s qiangshu event in Haikou, China.
