– Within the framework of his official visit to Finland, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee To Lam on October 21 held talks with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, during which they exchanged views on major strategic orientations to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Welcoming the proposals from Finnish enterprises in the field of circular economy, the General Secretary affirmed that Vietnam considers businesses as the centre of development and the driving force to realise its aspiration of becoming a developed, high-income country by 2045. – PM Pham Minh Chinh on October 21 chaired the 18th meeting of the National Steering Committee for Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, commending ministries and localities for their recent progress while urging stronger, more decisive actions to completely end IUU violations.

The online meeting, which was connected with 21 coastal provinces and centrally-run cities, was a regular sitting held on every Tuesday to intensify efforts in the fight against IUU fishing. Read full story

– PM Pham Minh Chinh on October 21 called for stronger determination, greater efforts, and more decisive, effective, and focused actions to fulfil all targets set out for 2025, given limited time left, heavy workload, and high requirements.

Chairing a meeting of the Government’s standing members to review the situation and outcomes of the implementation of tasks across all sectors in the first 10 months, and set key tasks for the remaining months of the year, PM Chinh urged ministries, ministry-level agencies, government bodies, and localities to strictly, promptly, and effectively carry out their assigned missions, ensuring high quality and accountability of ministers, heads of agencies, and chairpersons of provincial and municipal People’s Committees. – Donations from agencies, organisations, and individuals to support people affected by natural disasters and floods had totalled more than 1.06 trillion VND (over 40.46 million USD) as of 17:00 on October 21, according to the Central Relief Board under the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee.

– Vietnam’s 2024 Digital Transformation Index (DTI) reached 0.7955, up 8.6% from 0.7326 in 2023, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST).

Vietnam also climbed 15 places in the 2024 United Nations E-Government Development Index, ranking 71st out of 193 countries, reflecting strong progress in building a digital government. Read full story

– The Vietnam National Mine Action Centre (VNMAC) hosted a conference in Hanoi on October 21 to rally global aid and support to sweep the country clean of deadly mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the war.

PM suggests acceleration of Laos–Vietnam University establishment

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said the two sides should strengthen the teaching and learning of Vietnamese and Lao in both countries, including introducing Vietnamese as an optional foreign language in Lao schools, while continuing academic exchanges and programmes on tradition education to nurture the special bilateral relationship, he said.

Cook Islands attaches importance to ties with Vietnam
