Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last night by the Vietnam News Agency.

- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam, his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly, and a high-ranking delegation of Vietnam arrived at Helsinki Airport on October 20 evening, starting an official visit to Finland at the invitation of Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

General Secretary To Lam’s visit is the highest-level one by a Vietnamese leader to Finland, reflecting the great importance Vietnam attaches to their long-standing ties. It follows the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2023, marking a path of sustainable collaboration and heralding the next 50-year phase of cooperation. Read full story

- President Luong Cuong presented a report summarising the 2021–2026 term of the State leader at the 15th National Assembly’s ongoing 10th session on October 20.

The President’s report stated that during 2021–2026, the global and regional situations have been changing dramatically and unpredictably. Domestically, alongside opportunities and advantages, there are also numerous difficulties and challenges, including many unprecedented issues. - Vietnam remains steadfast in supporting the central role of the United Nations in maintaining peace, promoting cooperation, and addressing global and universal challenges, including trade, investment, and inclusive and sustainable development, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed.

The PM delivered his remarks in a pre-recorded video message sent to the opening of the 16th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD16) on October 20. Read full story

- Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to further strengthen its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Hungary, its first comprehensive partner in Central and Eastern Europe, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man affirmed.

Speaking at his talks with Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly Kover Laszlo following an official welcome ceremony in Hanoi on October 20, Chairman Man underlined the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two countries. He expressed Vietnam’s deep gratitude for Hungary’s valuable support during its struggle for national independence and reunification, as well as in the country’s current process of construction and development. - Defence cooperation between Vietnam and Belarus has gone smoothly, in line with the overall framework of their traditional friendship and multifaceted partnership as well as signed international treaties and agreements, said General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, and Minister of National Defence.

During a meeting with Maj. Gen. Pavel Muraveiko, visiting Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and First Deputy Minister of Defence of Belarus, in Hanoi on October 20, Giang affirmed that the Vietnamese people and the Vietnam People’s Army always treasure the valuable support and assistance from the Belarusian people and armed forces during the nation’s struggle for national independence and reunification. - Deputy Minister of Public Security Sen. Lieut. Gen Le Quoc Hung led a Vietnamese delegation to Austria from October 16 to 19, aiming to foster bilateral cooperation in security, policing, crime prevention, digital technology, and residency management.

Top legislator calls for strict discipline to further enhance quality of NA operations

Chairman Man clearly outlined key tasks for the time ahead and requested the prompt finalisation and promulgation of newly adopted laws and resolutions, proactive reviews to ensure consistency with new guidelines, and thorough preparations for the upcoming elections of deputies to the 16th NA and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 tenure.

Minister of Foreign Affairs receives Japan’s Tochigi Governor

Trung suggested that Tochigi continue to effectively implement signed agreements and further strengthen cooperation in areas that can create new development momentum for Vietnam, such as science and technology, digital transformation, innovation, and the training of high-quality human resources.

PM suggests acceleration of Laos–Vietnam University establishment

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said the two sides should strengthen the teaching and learning of Vietnamese and Lao in both countries, including introducing Vietnamese as an optional foreign language in Lao schools, while continuing academic exchanges and programmes on tradition education to nurture the special bilateral relationship, he said.

Cook Islands attaches importance to ties with Vietnam

Sir Tom Marsters, Representative of King Charles III to the Cook Islands welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Cook Islands and Vietnam in April 2022, describing it as laying a long-term vision for friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Government sets out coordinated plan for 2026 elections

The plan also aims to ensure that the elections are conducted in a democratic, equal and law-abiding manner, while being safe and cost-effective, truly becoming a nationwide civic event, thus contributing to strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the state apparatus and building a socialist rule-of-law state of Vietnam of the people, by the people and for the people.
