MPs and public act for people-oriented ASEAN

The ASEAN People’s Forum is of primary importance as ordinary peopledeliberate key issues that they can take part in and raise theiraspirations in support of the government, Vu Xuan Hong, who is also adeputy to the Vietnamese National Assembly, said in an exclusiveinterview with Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

Fromthere, people also forward recommendations to regional governments andparliaments, strengthening the ASEAN position towards people.

In regards to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Hongrecognised the regional legislative body’s efforts in getting closer topeople and further meeting people’s demand in ASEAN nations.

He highlighted Vietnam’s task and initiative in creating a turningpoint in regional awareness of AIPA’s role during its presidency thisyear.

Hong urged AIPA to reform its working style for more practical operations.

Any resolution passed by AIPA should be more binding to make them more feasible, he said.

“To reach its targets, AIPA itself should speed up reforms to becomean institution that will contribute to ASEAN development in a furtherpeople-centred manner,” said the top friendship activist of Vietnam.

He emphasised the need to boost people-to-people diplomacy betweenVietnam and other countries in order to build a people-based foundationfor the solid internal bloc that ASEAN is working towards.

“It is very important that we provide favourable conditions forpeople of member nations to strengthen solidarity and cooperation. Wecan make it in different ways, both bilateral and multilateral, bothsub-regional and regional, as well as with outsiders, to promotepeople’s role,” concluded the friendship union chief./.
