As representatives from people’s organisations are flocking to Hanoi for the sixth ASEAN People’s Forum, Vu Xuan Hong, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, emphasised the role played by people in building an ASEAN community of solidarity, development and prosperity.

The ASEAN People’s Forum is of primary importance as ordinary people deliberate key issues that they can take part in and raise their aspirations in support of the government, Vu Xuan Hong, who is also a deputy to the Vietnamese National Assembly, said in an exclusive interview with Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

From there, people also forward recommendations to regional governments and parliaments, strengthening the ASEAN position towards people.

In regards to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Hong recognised the regional legislative body’s efforts in getting closer to people and further meeting people’s demand in ASEAN nations.

He highlighted Vietnam’s task and initiative in creating a turning point in regional awareness of AIPA’s role during its presidency this year.

Hong urged AIPA to reform its working style for more practical operations.

Any resolution passed by AIPA should be more binding to make them more feasible, he said.

“To reach its targets, AIPA itself should speed up reforms to become an institution that will contribute to ASEAN development in a further people-centred manner,” said the top friendship activist of Vietnam.

He emphasised the need to boost people-to-people diplomacy between Vietnam and other countries in order to build a people-based foundation for the solid internal bloc that ASEAN is working towards.

“It is very important that we provide favourable conditions for people of member nations to strengthen solidarity and cooperation. We can make it in different ways, both bilateral and multilateral, both sub-regional and regional, as well as with outsiders, to promote people’s role,” concluded the friendship union chief./.
