Yangon (VNA) – The MyanmarGovernment pledged to cooperate with regional nations to combat transnational tradingin counterfeit pharmaceuticals, local media reported.
In a meeting with French Ambassador to Myanmar Olivier Richard, Deputy Ministerof Justice U Win Myint, who is also President of the International Institute ofResearch Against Counterfeit Medicines (IRACM) of Myanmar, warned of the dangerof counterfeit medicine trading and consumption in countries worldwide,including Myanmar.
He stressed that it is necessary to have effective laws to prevent productionof fake medicines.
Myanmar is paying special attention to fighting fake medicines because domesticpharmaceutical production has yet to meet the demand and the country has toimport medicines.
The country joined the United Nations Convention against TransnationalOrganised Crime, and adopted the National Drug Law in 1992, whichwas revised in 2014.
In December last year, local authorities seized a large volume ofpharmaceuticals worth over 21.8 billion kyat (1.32 million USD) under a campaignin Yangon city.
Myanmar will work with nations in the Mekong sub-region to organise a seminar on law and policyto prevent fake medicines.-VNA
