Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung held talks with Speaker of the Belgian House of Representatives, Andre Flahaut, in Brussels on Dec. 6 after a welcoming ceremony.

At their talks, NA Chairman Hung affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Belgium .

He also spoke highly of Belgium ’s role as a founding country of the European Union (EU) and its positive contribution to the union, expressing his wish that Belgium will continue to support Vietnam to step up its comprehensive relationship with the EU.

Vietnam is also willing to act as a bridge to boost Belgium-ASEAN and ASEAN-EU ties, he said.

Chairman Hung suggested the two legislative bodies enhance exchanges of delegations at all levels, share experience in legislative and supervisory activities to consolidate mutual trust and understanding, as well as support each other at multilateral forums for peace, national independence, development and social progress.

The Vietnamese legislature is ready to cooperate with Belgium ’s parliament in overseeing the implementation of joint agreements to bring more practical benefits to the two countries.

For his part, Speaker Andre Flahaut said he believed that Hung’s visit will contribute to promoting friendship and cooperation between the two legislatures and open up new prospects in bilateral ties, as well as in inter-regional and international cooperation.

He informed his guest of Belgium ’s plans to establish a new government, which he said will create favourable conditions for further boosting Vietnam-Belgium cooperation in all fields.

Earlier, NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung attended and witnessed the signing ceremony of a cooperative agreement between the Hanoi National University and Vrije Brussels University .

Chairman Hung and his entourage also visited the Flanders regional parliament and met with Jan Peumans, Speaker of the parliament.

Chairman Hung thanked the Belgian people for their support to Vietnam during its national construction and development.

The legislator said he hopes the Flanders parliament will further boost cooperation with the Vietnamese NA and NA delegations, thus fostering the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

The same day, Chairman Hung met the Vietnamese Embassy’s staff and overseas Vietnamese in Belgium at the head office of the Vietnamese Embassy.

On the occasion of visiting the European Parliament, NA Chairman Hung attended the debut of the Vietnamese Friends Group in the European Parliament./.
