Opening of the Ho Chi Minh Trail: Historic decision of strategic significance

In May 1959, the General Military Commission and the Ministry of Defence decided to establish a special military task force, later known as Group 559. This group was tasked with opening a supply route to transport goods and organise the movement of soldiers and officials from North to South Vietnam and vice-versa. The route was inaugurated on the birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, and thus was called the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
