Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam National Industry - Energy Group (Petrovietnam) is implementing drastic and synchronised measures to ensure that the Long Phu 1 Thermal Power Plant project will be completed and put into operation in 2027, with Unit 1 scheduled for commissioning in the second quarter and Unit 2 in the third quarter of the year.
At a recent working session with the Long Phu 1 Petroleum Power Project Management Board, Petrovietnam Chairman Le Manh Hung reaffirmed the goal of bringing the project into operation as planned, stressing the need for determination and consistency in execution.
According to the Management Board, bidding documents have been issued and direct negotiations completed for 27 out of 36 bidding packages, several of which have been finalised. The board is currently focusing on the turbine and generator procurement package (STG package), a key component of the project.
To date, seven packages, including one consultancy and six construction or combined contracts, have been signed and are being implemented on site, with around 500 workers directly involved. Contractors are adhering closely to their schedules, while the Management Board holds weekly and monthly meetings to promptly address any obstacles or emerging issues.
Construction progress has surpassed expectations, with boiler installation reaching 20.7%, 3.41% ahead of schedule. The project team is installing economiser tube assemblies for both boilers and completing the operation platform for Boiler No. 2. The Management Board is also working closely with PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) to swiftly resolve design and material-related issues, keeping the project on track.
Project Director Ha Dinh Nien said that, barring major cost fluctuations in bidding packages, the project is expected to meet its completion timeline and management objectives. To ensure timely supply of equipment and materials from early 2026, the Management Board has requested continued support from Petrovietnam, particularly in facilitating coordination with the leadership of General Electric (GE) in the US.
To speed up progress and address challenges, Chairman Hung instructed the Management Board to review and enhance project governance, strengthen risk management, and focus on resolving key issues to protect the project’s critical path.
He also emphasised the need for tighter supervision of signed contracts, experience sharing for subsequent tenders, alignment of procurement schedules with the adjusted master plan, and enhanced control of safety, health, and environmental management.
He requested that the consortium of PTSC and PETROCONs closely coordinate with the Management Board to remove bottlenecks and ensure overall project progress.
With a designed capacity of 1,200 MW, once operational, the Long Phu 1 Thermal Power Plant will contribute approximately 7 billion kWh of electricity annually to the national grid. Under Decision No. 262/QD-TTg dated April 1, 2024, approving the implementation plan of Power Development Plan VIII, the project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
Upon completion, the Long Phu 1 plant will play a crucial role in meeting national power demand, supporting socio-economic development in Soc Trang province and the wider Mekong Delta region, and contributing to national energy security. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s direction on ensuring stable electricity supply for production, business, and daily life, serving the country’s sustainable economic growth./.
