Seminar seeks ways for climate change adaptation

Scientists working in science and technology, and environment gathered at a seminar in the central city of Da Nang on December 4 to discuss how to better adapt to climate change.

The event was heldby the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment as part of theScientific and Technological Programme serving the National TargetProgramme to Respond to Climate Change (NTPRCC).

In hisopening speech, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thai Lai said Vietnam is seenas one of countries hardest hit by climate change, especially itsMekong Delta region.

In recent year, climate change has adverselyimpacted on both production and living conditions as well as nationalpoverty reduction goals and sustainable development of all sectorsnationwide, he noted.

During the seminar, participants sharedinformation and practical experience in assessing environment andclimate change impacts, and proposed measures in response to climatechange.

Realising threats of climate change to nationalsustainable development, the Government has swiftly made an overall planto cope with the phenomena. In 2008, it approved the NTPRCC.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Science and Technology was assigned to workwith the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to build andimplement a scientific and technological programme to serve the NTPRCCin the 2011-2015 period, which aims to map out methods to effectivelytackle climate change.

After the three years of implementation,the programme has greatly contributed to mitigating climate changeimpacts on Vietnam.-VNA

Urgent solutions needed to address plastic waste pollution: Experts

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, approximately 1.8 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated in Vietnam every year, with between 0.28 - 0.73 million tonnes of this waste ending up in the oceans. Only 27% of plastic waste is recycled or repurposed by businesses and facilities.

The released animals include one Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis), two Keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii), two Impressed tortoises (Manouria impressa), three Pygmy slow lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus), one Big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum), four Bourret’s box turtles (Cuora bourreti), and one Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis).

Two new lizard species discovered in Vietnam

The discovery of these two new lizard species provides further evidence of Vietnam’s exceptional biodiversity, particularly in the Sop Cop Nature Reserve in Son La province, and the south-central coastal region. This also highlights Vietnam’s critical role as a global biodiversity hotspot for reptiles and amphibians in the Indochinese region.

Cycling inspires greener Ho Chi Minh City

Hosted by the Dutch Consulate General in coordination with the Vietnam-Netherlands Friendship Association and the Dutch Business Association in Vietnam, the February 16 event welcomed two Dutch cyclists who traveled nearly 20,000 kilometers across 24 countries to Vietnam.
