Southern cake festival underway in Can Tho

Can Tho (VNA) – The fifth southern traditional cake festival, themed “Southern specialties toward integration”, began in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on April 16.

Featuring more than 150 stalls and 100 types of cakes, the event is gathering domestic firms across 26 provinces and cities nationwide and their peers from Laos, the Republic of Korea, Japan, France, Indonesia, India and Malaysia.

The four-day festival seeks to introduce visitors to the region's traditional cakes like banh tet, a cylindrical glutinous rice cake filled with green bean paste and pork; banh u, a small, pyramidal glutinous rice cake; banh tet la cam, a cylindrical violet glutinous rice cake; banh xeo, a rice pancake with shrimp; and banh bo dua, a coconut-flavoured sponge cake.

Apart from cakes, specialties and handicrafts from different localities are also showcased.

Cake–making performances, baking contests, folk games and musical concerts are other highlights of the festival.

The fourth festival attracted 160,000 visitors, with more than 100 types of cakes and 50 specialty dishes on display.-VNA
