Transport Ministry urged to hasten Long Thanh airport

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has asked the Ministry of Transport to urgently complete its report on financing and building Long Thanh International Airport in southern Dong Nai Province.

All parties concerned should be consulted andtheir opinions taken into account before the report is submitted to thePrime Minister on August 20, the Deputy PM said on Aug. 11.

He advised that ministries of Planning and Investment and Transport aswell as relevant agencies petition the PM for establishing a StateAssessment Council to examine the investment report.

Underan approved master plan officially made pubic last August, the airportwill be built in Dong Nai Province's Long Thanh District, some40km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

The new airportwill function as an entrepot in the Southeast Asian region, able tohandle 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo a year by2030.

The 5000ha airport will also have the capacity to allow massive jumbo jets like the A380-800 to land and take off.

Preparatory works for the country's biggest airport, includingfinancial arrangements, are already underway. The Southern AirportCorporation is in charge of the project development.

Construction of the airport is scheduled to start in 2015 and completed in three phases.

The first phase, carried out between 2015 and 2020, will involve aninvestment of 6.74 billion USD. At the end of this phase, the airportwill be able to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes ofcargo every year.

At the end of the second phase theairport will have three runways and the ability to handle 50 millionpassengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo.

When the finalphase is complete, it will have four runways and four terminals withthe targeted capacity of handling 100 million passengers and 5 milliontonnes of cargo per annum.

The plan also envisages thatthe Long Thanh International Airport will be connected to HCMCity and other neighbouring provinces by a network of highways andexpress railway routes, some already under construction.-VNA

Vietnam among countries with high human development: UNDP report

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.

Local officials are required to strengthen on-the-ground inspections and take prompt action to address any signs of stagnation or lack of accountability in executing the campaign. Xuyen Viet Oil case: Appellate verdict announced, with six receiving reduced sentences

Specifically, the trial panel sentenced the mastermind of the case, Mai Thi Hong Hanh, ex-Director and Chairwoman of the Board of Members of Xuyen Viet Oil, to 11 years in prison for the crime of “giving bribes” and 17 years for “violating regulations on the management and use of State assets, causing loss and wastefulness.” The combined sentence is 28 years in prison, 2 years less than the first-instance verdict.
