Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of National Defence held a conference in Hanoi on October 16 to review the missions of Engineering Unit Rotation 3 and Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 6 after their successful completion of United Nations peacekeeping operations.

In September last year, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations deployed the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 6, comprising 63 personnel, to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and Engineering Unit Rotation 3, with 184 personnel, to the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). Both units have now safely returned home after completing their missions.

Chairing the conference, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Member of the Central Military Commission, and Deputy Minister of National Defence, praised both contingents for their outstanding performance and absolute safety throughout the missions.

He stressed that in the coming time, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence will continue to study the expansion of Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations in terms of scale, form, type of units, and operational areas.

Chien revealed that he has reported to the Politburo, seeking approval to expand Vietnam’s peacekeeping force to include five new types of units – a mechanised infantry unit, a communications unit, a military police or supervision unit, an airport support unit, and a multi-purpose transport helicopter unit.

He also called for the implementation of appropriate policies and post-deployment arrangements for returned officers and personnel, while emphasising the need to develop high-quality human resources for the 2025–2030 period.

During its mission, the engineering team repaired and upgraded more than 300 km of main supply routes, applied K-31 soil stabilisation technology to strengthen 27,215 sq.m of airfield surfaces, and built two large-scale workshops three months ahead of schedule. The unit also developed smart barracks for peacekeeping units, exceeding both quality and timeline targets, and assisted in recovering over 200 heavy vehicles that were stuck along key transport routes.

Meanwhile, the field hospital provided medical treatment for 2,650 patients, including UN staff and local civilians, successfully handling many complex and severe cases. The team also performed 6,585 physiotherapy procedures, showcasing Vietnam’s strong expertise in traditional medicine. In addition, it implemented effective disease prevention and control measures against malaria, monkeypox, and cholera./.
