HCM City (VNA) - The Vietnam U17 women’s football team on October 17 clinched a 1–0 victory over Hong Kong (China), securing their place in the finals of the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup.
In the qualifying round, Vietnam were drawn in Group D alongside Guam and Hong Kong (China). In their opening match, coach Okiyama Masahiko’s players made a strong start with a 5–0 win over Guam, while Hong Kong defeated Guam 7–1 to temporarily top the group on goal difference. Thus, the match between Vietnam and Hong Kong became the decisive fixture for the group’s sole qualification spot.
Vietnam began the game on the front foot, maintaining an attacking rhythm from the outset. However, Hong Kong demonstrated remarkable improvement in physical strength and defensive organisation, posing difficulties for the hosts in finding a breakthrough.
Gradually regaining control, Vietnam created several dangerous chances. In the 30th minute, Hong Thai’s sharp header forced goalkeeper Yau Hazel into a spectacular save. Subsequent efforts from Phuong Vy, Minh Anh, and Thao Nguyen failed to find the net, leaving the first half goalless.
After the break, Vietnam continued to press forward relentlessly. Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 66th minute, when Hong Thai delivered a precise through ball to Hai Yen, who skillfully controlled it inside the box and struck a fine angled shot to put Vietnam ahead 1–0. In the closing minutes, the home side defended solidly, maintaining their shape and composure to preserve the victory until the final whistle.
Speaking after the match, coach Okiyama Masahiko expressed satisfaction with the team's tremendous fighting spirit, discipline, and determination. This victory is a well-deserved reward for the entire team’s effort, he stated.
With two wins in two matches, six goals scored and none conceded, Vietnam topped Group D and officially booked their spot in the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup finals.
