Hanoi (VNA) – Construction of the An Khanh Data Centre and the Viettel Research & Development Centre began on August 19, part of a nationwide campaign to mark the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2), which sees 250 projects launched or inaugurated simultaneously across 34 provinces and cities.
The Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) said the two facilities will play a foundational role, affirming its pioneering position in implementing the Politburo’s Resolution 57 on developing research centres, testing facilities, and national key laboratories for strategic technologies.
The Viettel R&D Centre, invested with 10 trillion VND (about 380 million USD), will be built on 13ha at the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park in Hanoi. Scheduled for completion in 2030, the six-building complex will serve as a comprehensive hub for research, design, prototyping, and production of advanced “Made in Vietnam” technologies. Its activities will range from defence research – such as missile systems, UAVs, satellites, and radar – to civilian applications in big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing. The centre is expected to employ 2,500 high-quality staff and meet international standards for sustainability, security, and innovation.
Meanwhile, the An Khanh Data Centre will cover 1.9ha with an investment of 17.5 trillion VND, designed for a capacity of 60 MW. Expected to be the largest data centre in northern Vietnam, it will start operations in the second quarter of 2026 and be upgraded to Viettel’s second hyperscale data centre by 2030. Built to Uptime Tier III standards, it will integrate Viettel-developed AI, multi-layered security, and advanced cooling systems, supporting the Government’s Net Zero targets and providing critical infrastructure for national digital transformation and AI deployment.
Viettel Chairman and General Director, Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang, affirmed the group’s commitment to completing the projects on schedule and to international standards. He stressed that the facilities would not only provide cutting-edge infrastructure today but also serve as a sustainable foundation for future generations.
This year, Viettel has also launched several other strategic projects, including the Tan Phu Trung Data Centre and Viettel Tower in Da Nang, helping to strengthen Vietnam’s defence capacity and digital transformation network./.
