Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has announced the completion of the nationwide campaign to do away with temporary and dilapidated housing, describing it as a special national project embodying the Party’s will and people’s hearts.

The Government leader, who also chairs the Central Emulation and Commendation Council and heads the Central Steering Committee for the Eradication of Temporary and Dilapidated Houses, called it a remarkable achievement in sustainable poverty alleviation, laying the foundation for equity, social progress and sustainability, while presiding a national conference in Hanoi on August 26. - Vice State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan had meetings with Nepali President Ram Chandra Poudel and Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli as part of her official visit to Nepal on August 24–25.

At the meetings, Vice President Xuan stressed that the visit provided an opportunity for the two countries to review their relations and outline future cooperation. She reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to its traditional friendship with Nepal, and expressed gratitude for Nepal’s consistent support for Vietnam during its past struggle for independence and reunification as well as in its current nation-building and development efforts. - Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives Gerry Brownlee will pay an official visit to Vietnam from August 27 – 31, aiming to build on the outcomes of recent high-level exchanges and advance cooperation in various areas, including trade, investment, defence-security, parliamentary affairs, education, agriculture, climate change response, people-to-people exchanges, and collaboration at international forums.

The visit, the first to Vietnam by Brownlee since he assumed office, takes place at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (June 19, 1975 – 2025). It is expected to consolidate political trust, deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and promote more practical and effective bilateral cooperation. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed off a dispatch directing the settlement of Typhoon Kajiki’s consequences as the storm has wreaked havoc on the northern part of central Vietnam.

Dispatch No. 147/CD-TTg, dated August 25, was sent to leaders of central Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Quang Tri provinces, northern Ninh Binh province, ministries, ministry-level bodies, Government agencies, and the Office of the National Steering Committee for Civil Defence. Read full story

- Despite significant global challenges, Vietnam has achieved remarkable economic progress in recent years, the Asian Development Bank (ADB)'s Country Director for Vietnam Shantanu Chakraborty has said in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

He highlighted several key drivers of growth, beginning with sound economic management that strengthened resilience against the COVID-19 pandemic and global geopolitical uncertainty. The Government acted decisively with flexible measures and timely fiscal and monetary policies to mitigate supply chain disruptions and heightened international instability, he noted. - Vietnam's electric vehicle (EV) maker VinFast announced on August 26 that it will showcase its first electric buses in Europe at Busworld Europe 2025, slated for October 3–9 in Brussels, Belgium.

By adding advanced and smart buses to its European offerings, VinFast is asserting its position as an all-EV manufacturer with one of the most comprehensive and wide-ranging e-mobility ecosystems. The launch of VinFast e-buses is designed to directly contribute to Europe’s green transition, broadening the zero-emission public transport network. The buses of this firm are expected to enter service in 2026. Read full story

- Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang on August 25 met with visiting Zhang Min, Vice Governor of China’s Henan province, to discuss strengthening bilateral economic and trade ties

Thang highlighted the robust growth of Vietnam–China relations, noting that China has been Vietnam’s largest trading partner for over 20 years, with trade reaching more than 200 billion USD in 2024. Vietnam is now China’s fourth-largest trading partner globally and its top partner in ASEAN. Read full story

- Northern and central localities are grappling with the widespread impacts of Typhoon Kajiki, the fifth storm to arise in the East Sea this year, which has brought torrential rain, flooding, and strong winds across multiple provinces.

The storm, which has weakened into a tropical depression over central Laos on early August 26 morning, has caused significant disruption in urban centres, with continued warnings of landslides, flash floods, and further weather hazards in the hours ahead./. Read full story

PM urges industry, trade sector to pioneer in six key areas

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that to make a substantive contribution to national development, the industry and trade sector must also achieve double-digit growth, generate new jobs, strengthen traditional growth drivers such as export and consumption, and accelerate emerging engines of growth, including the green, digital, circular, knowledge-based and sharing economies.

Two military officers promoted to rank of Senior Lieutenant General

NA Chairman urges journalists to reflect legislature's strategic vision

The NA leader expressed his confidence that in 2026, journalists will continue to uphold their responsibility, report objectively and from multiple perspectives, accompany the NA in conveying its activities promptly and comprehensively, and identify shortcomings in law-making and legal enforcement to help people-elected agencies operate more effectively and efficiently.
